In 1834, Thomas Byrd of Hall County paid $400 to purchase Land Lot 403 -- a swath of 40 acres in what was then Cherokee County. Circuit riders often stayed in the Byrd house's two parsons rooms. The structure also served as a stagecoach stop on the mail route to the gold mint in Dahlonega. In fact, the old road bed can still be seen. The Hopewell Baptist Church, was constituted here in 1851. At that time, the building was home to Rhoda Byrd Rogers -- Thomas Byrd's youngest daughter. The house is now owned by the City of Milton and serves as its Senior Center.
